Julie & Julia
Topic: Movies

Several months ago I was going through the checkout line at Wal-Mart when the cashier asked if I had seen the movie Julia & Julia before she swiped our movie purchase. I told her no but that I had heard a few good things and thought I might like it. She told me it was just an "OK" movie and that I should rent it before buying so I said to put it back. I mean, she's the Wal-Mart cashier, right? Are they ever wrong?! Apparently, yes! I don't know what I was thinking in listening to her in the first place. I'd heard good things about the movie and I love food movies and mostly anything to do with cooking so I really had wanted to see this movie. I don't know why I so easily allowed myself to be talked out of buying it, except that maybe it's because I'm a people pleaser. I'll remember this experience the next time someone tries to talk me out of a purchase... movie or otherwise. BTW, the next item on my to-buy list is an Apple iPad... just as soon as I can save enough money... by which time the second generation will be out and all the fixes will be made... hopefully... don't stand in my way, people...

But I digress........

I never got around to renting the movie but my daughter had watched it before with a friend so the other day she finally borrowed it and came home and said "Mom, you really MUST watch this movie!" It was a rough day for me and I needed something... anything... to cheer me up so I agreed to a movie night. I am so glad I did!! This movie had me in stitches and oohing and aahing over not just the food but the love the two main couples in the movie had for each other. I loved how the movie went back and forth between the modern day life of Julie Powell and the 40's and 50's life of Julia Child. If you have not yet seen this movie(ok... most smart, funny, blogging, foodie, FUN people have seen it, BUT there might actually be someone out there who wears a larger dunce hat than me who is still listening to the Wal-Mart cashier!!!), then you absolutely MUST see it! I mean, go out and buy it right.this.minute. Wait, finish reading my blog post first, and then go buy it ;-)

After the movie was over I checked out the special features and watched the short film on creating Julie & Julia. It was interesting to learn that the Julia Child portion was not exactly a literal rendition of her true life but more of a character rendition of how Julie looked at Julia. As Julie's husband said toward the end of the movie, "it's not the 'real life' Julia that's important, it's the Julia 'in your head.'" (paraphrasing, of course)... Much of life is like that I think! For better or for worse :-/

We cook a lot around here, and most of it is from scratch, or semi-scratch at least but after watching the movie I wanted to do something extra special... but nothing so extravagant that it required de-boning a duck...LOL. Victoria has been asking to make Cornish hens A LOT lately so guess what we decided to do for our dinner the next evening?! We had Cornish rock hens hand rubbed with olive oil and a lemon pepper seasoning, cheesy vegetable medley, and Parmesan and herb roasted red potatoes. Dinner was delicious!!

Have you cook anything yummy lately?! Have ya seen any good movies?! Feel free to share in the comments!!

The Future of Food
Topic: Movies

This is a long video (about an hour and a half) but worth the viewing, in my opinion. Please consider watching it if you care to know more about genetically engineered seeds, pesticides, etc.. You might think your healthy food is safe... think again!!
