Topic: Books
I've started to re-read one of my older books that I'd nearly forgotten I had. It is called Before You Meet Prince Charming. I have realized that my way of thinking has taken a turn for the worst over the past 6 years. My parents have always tried to guide me toward old-fashioned courtship and I like that idea but I also just wanted to date. Because of that, I had started to think more in the ways of the world where dating is concerned, than God's way. I mean, good grief, I really just wanted a boyfriend cause all my friends had boyfriends already. I guess I was just thinking in terms of what I couldn't have rather than waiting for what was best for me. The book reminded me that "the devil tries to give you his 'best' before God can give you His best."
A lot of what the book says makes total sense, and helped me to notice that there are many things very wrong with the dating system in place today. We always want to modernize and improve things but sometimes modern doesn't necessarily mean improvement!
Here is a list of some things the book says is dangerous about the dating system of today's world:
People date in order to have a good time right now, instead of planning for a long term commitment.
Dating is thinking about fun, rather than loyalty to your one lifelong partner and the joy of the best marriage later.
The worlds way is "now" oriented, whereas Gods way is "future" oriented.
The worlds way involves pain of separation, but Gods way involves no separation (heartbreak).
Dating today is "me oriented." True love ALWAYS puts others first and focuses on another persons needs before our own.
The worlds way is for pleasure, but Gods way is for commitment.
The worlds way is about human thinking, current trends, and culture. Gods way is always based on the Word of God - Biblical standards, principles, and goals.
We date with the idea of breaking up if we don't like the person. Isn't that more of a practice for divorce instead of marriage!?! Again, the worlds way is temporary, but Gods way is permanent!
I'm almost through with the book. I've learned a lot. Maybe the most important lesson is that I still have a lot to learn, or at least my Mom says so ;-)
Until next time --
